Staff Selection Commission (SSC)

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) established in 1975 under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances &Pension conducts various exams for recruiting staffs into various post in ministries, departments and organisation under Group C and Group D category in the Indian Government.Every year thousands of vacancies being filled up. Each and every year the number of candidates applying for the exam is increasing, so the government is focusing on providing required facilities and services as sought. The prime among them are Combined Graduate level exam(CGL) and Combined Higher secondary Level exam (CHSL).

Combined Graduate level (CGL) exam a computer based online exam (Objective type)that will be conducted in four stages: Tier -1, Tier-2, Tier-3 & Tier-4 and the exams will be codified if it is conducted in multiple shifts and the marks for the selection will be decided by SSC and it will be considered final for selecting the candidates for the further rounds and for the final merit list.

Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) exam is also a computer based online exam (Objective type) that will be conducted in three stages: Tier-1, Tier-2, Tier-3 and SSC holds the sole responsibility for selection, appointment and all other activities pertaining to the recruitment. In addition to these two exams other exams like Sub InspectorSI) Exam, Hindi Translator exam, etc., are also being conducted on annual basis.

SSC Exam Eligibility Criteria

The Staff Selection Commission announces eligibility criteria for every exam in its recruitment notification prior to the exam. Candidates should check the official website for SSC exam to get updated information about eligibility criteria. In general, however, the eligibility criteria for different examinations are as follows.

Eligibility Criteria for SSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam

Minimum qualification required for diffident posts as follows;

  • • Compiler Posts – Bachelor’s Degree from any recognized university with Statistics or Economics or Mathematics as compulsory or elective subject.
  • • Statistical Investigator Posts – Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, or Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics or Economics or Commerce, with Statistics as one of the main subjects.

Eligibility Criteria for SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level Exam

Minimum qualification required to appear for this exam is 10+2 or its equivalent from any recognized board. Age limit for this exam is 18-27 years.

Eligibility Criteria for SSC Junior Engineer Exam

Minimum qualification required to apply for different junior engineer posts are as follows;

For Junior Engineer (Electrical & Civil) in CPWD & Department of Posts – Three years’ diploma in electrical or civil engineering from any government recognized institution.
For Junior Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical), Border Roads Organization (BRO) Ministry of Defence – Three years’ diploma in electrical or mechanical engineering from any government recognized institution or university.
For Junior Engineer (Civil), Border Roads Organization (BRO) Ministry of Defence – Three years’ diploma in civil engineering from any government recognized institution or university.
For Junior Engineer (Civil) in MES – Degree in civil engineering or three year’s diploma in civil engineering with two years’ hands-on experience in civil engineering works.
For Junior Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical) in MES – Degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or three year’s diploma in electrical or mechanical engineering with two years’ hands-on experience in electrical or mechanical engineering works.
For Junior Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical) in CWC and Farakka Barrage – Degree or Diploma in electrical or mechanical engineering.
For Junior Engineer (Quantity Surveying and Contract) in MES – Three years’ diploma in civil engineering or intermediate degree in Building and Quantity Surveying Sub divisional 2 of the Institute of Surveyors (India).

Age Limit for different junior engineer posts is as follows;

SSC CGL SYLLABUS (TIER 3 – DESCRIPTIVE PAPER)

Tier 3 will be a descriptive type Pen and Paper mode examination. It will be in English/Hindi (writing of Essay/Precis/Letter /Application Writing etc. It will be of Total 100 marks and 60 minutes time is given for it (For VH and candidates suffering from Cerebral Palsy: 80 Minutes).

This paper has been introduced to assess the writing skills of the candidates which are necessary for Government jobs. The Paper would comprise writing of an Essay / Passage of 250 words and Letter / Application Writing of approximately 150 words.

SSC CGL SYLLABUS (TIER 4 SKILL TEST – CPT/DEST/TYPING TEST)

Candidates who clear the Tier 3 Exams are called for the Tier 4 phase. This section is qualifying one. This section aims to judge a candidate’s personality traits, communication skills, and leadership skills, in addition to his/her academic knowledge.

DATA ENTRY SPEED TEST (DEST) –

Tax Assistants Post (Central Excise & Income Tax) – It requires 8,000 Key Depression per hour.
The Data Entry Speed Test will be conducted for a passage of about 2000 key depressions for a duration of 15 minutes.

COMPUTER PROFICIENCY TEST (CPT) –

for the posts of Assistant Section Officer of CSS, Assistant Section Officer (MEA), Assistant Section Officer in AFHQ, Assistant in Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and Assistant (GSI) in the Ministry of Mines, CPT Test comprises in three modules:

SSC Exam Selection Process

SSC conducts various examinations every year for recruitment to different posts in various departments of the government of India and its subordinate offices. The eligibility criteria and selection procedure for different posts could be different. Let’s take a look at recruitment and selection procedure for some notable posts.

SSC Combined Graduate Level CGL Exam – Graduates from any recognized university in India can apply for this exam. The selection procedure includes written examination (Tier I and Tier II), followed by interview/skill test/ computer proficiency test, and document verification.

Data Entry Operator (DEO) Examination – The candidate must pass 10+2 or its equivalent exam and should possess a specific data entry speed. The selection is done on the basis of the candidate’s performance in objective-type written examination, followed by a skill test.

Junior Translators (CSOLS) Examination – To apply for this exam, the applicant must clear 10+2 or its equivalent exam. The selection process consists of written examination and interview.

Stenographer Exam – One needs to pass 10+2 or its equivalent exam to appear for this exam. The procedure of selection includes mainly two phases – a written test and a skill test in stenography.

Lower Division Clerk Exam – Minimum qualification required for the exam is 10+2 or its equivalent. One needs to clear a written test with objective type questions and a computer-based typing test to get selected for this post.

Sub Inspector in CPOs, CAPFs, and Assistant Sub-Inspector in CISF Examination – The candidate should have a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline and should have a valid driving license. The selection procedure includes written test, physical efficiency test, followed by personality test and medical examination.

SSC Exam Pattern

NEW PATTERN FOR SSC CGL 2018 EXAM

The revised exam pattern for SSC CGL includes four tiers – Tier 1 (Preliminary Exam), Tier 2 (Mains), Tier 3 (Descriptive), and Tier 4 (DEST/CPT).

Paper Mode: Tier 2 will be conducted online.

Paper-I & II are compulsory for all the categories of posts.
Paper-III is only for those candidates who apply for the post of Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) and who are shortlisted in Tier-I for this Post/ Paper.
Paper IV is only for those candidates who are shortlisted in Tier-I for Paper-IV i.e. for the posts of Assistant Audit Officer/ Assistant Accounts Officer
